Wind PicWind energy is responsible for over 5% of U.S. electricity generating capacity, making it the second largest source of renewable energy in the U.S.1
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, January 2015
The past few years have been a roller coaster for the industry, whose nadir came in 2012. That year, the wind industry added a whopping 13,131 megawatts of capacity in the U.S.; that was over half of the electricity generation capacity added in to the grid that year.2

Unfortunately, the Production Tax Credit – a crucial policy driver for the wind industry – briefly expired at the end of that year. It was extended for a year shortly thereafter, but the damage was done.3
USA Today, January 2013
Wind energy installations plummeted to just 1,680 megawatts in 2013.4
American Wind Energy Association, April 2014
Thanks to the extension at the beginning of 2013 and the retroactive extension at the end of 2014, wind installations rebounded somewhat in 2014. But the tax credit expired yet again at the end of 2014, and its future is now uncertain.
